Creative Eco Crafts: Little Green Heart Cushion

Hello everyone, we hope you are having a lovely week. Today Carole is going to be sharing how she knits her green heart cushions, for our fourth Eco Craft for Green Week Thurrock which is part of the Great Big Green Week, a national week of events celebrating action on climate change created by the Climate Coalition.

This cushion measures 20cm wide by 12cm high

Materials

Small quantity of DK yarn (No more than 40g)

A pair of 3.75mm knitting needles

Stitch holder or large safety pin

A sewing needle with a large eye

Toy stuffing or small scraps of materials

Abbreviations

K         Knit

P         Purl

Inc       Increase

sts       Stitches

tog       Together

Heart Knitting Pattern – Knit two alike

Tip: To get a neat edge at both ends of the row, slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch

Cast on 6 stitches

Row 1: Slip 1, Knit to end

Row 2: Slip 1, Purl 4 Knit 1

Row 3: Slip 1, Increase 1 stitch in the next 4 stitches Knit 1 (10 sts)

Row 4: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch Knit 1

Row 5: Cast on 2 stitches then Knit to end of row (12 sts)

Row 6: Cast on 2 stitches then Purl to last stitch Knit 1 (14 sts)

Row 7: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K10, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (16sts)

Row 8: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, P12, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (18sts)           

Row 9: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K14, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (20sts)

Row 10: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, P16, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (22sts)

Row 11: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K18, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (24sts)

Row 12: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, P20, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (26sts)

Row 13: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K22, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (28sts)

Row 14: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, P24, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (30sts)

Row 15: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K26, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (32sts)

Row 16: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Row 17: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K28, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (34sts)

Row 18: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Row 19: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K30, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (36sts)

Row 20: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Row 21: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K32, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (38sts)

Row 22: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Row 23: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K34, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (40sts)

Row 24: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Row 25: Slip 1, Inc 1 stitch, K36, Inc 1 stitch, K1 (42sts)

Row 26: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Then knit 10 rows in stocking stitch. Remembering to Slip the first stitch and knit the last stitch on each row.

Next row: Slip 1, K2tog, K to the last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1 (40sts).

Next row: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Repeat the last two rows (38 sts).

Next row: – Slip 1, K2tog, K13 stitches, K2tog, K1 (17sts)

Put the 19 stitches on the left-hand needle onto a stitch holder or large safety pin

Turn your knitting around then

Next Row: Slip 1, P2tog, P11, P2tog, K1 (15sts)

Next Row: Slip 1, K2tog, K9, K2tog, K1 (13sts)

Next Row: Slip 1, P2tog, P7, P2tog, K1 (11sts)

Next Row: Slip 1, K2tog, K5, K2tog, K1 (9sts)

Next Row: Slip 1, Purl to last stitch, K1

Cast off and cut the yarn

Put the 19 stitches from the stitch holder onto a knitting needle with right side facing

First row: Join yarn, K1, K2tog, K to the last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1 (17 sts).

Next Row: Slip 1, P2tog, P11, P2tog, K1 (15sts)

Next Row: Slip 1, K2tog, K9, K2tog, K1 (13sts)

Next Row: Slip 1, P2tog, P7, P2tog, K1 (11sts)

Next Row: Slip 1, K2tog, K5, K2tog, K1 (9sts)

Next row: Slip 1 Purl to last stitch K1

Cast off

Making up the Cushion

Lay the two hearts on top of one another with right sides facing and pin together.

Sew together leaving a gap so that you can stuff the cushion.

Turn the cushion right side out then fill with stuffing

Pin the open edge together and over sew the edges to join the gap.
