Creative Eco Crafts: Collaged Seascape

Today is the first day of Green Week Thurrock which is part of the Great Big Green Week, a national week of events celebrating action on climate change created by the Climate Coalition.

Today’s Eco Craft is a collage made from recycled materials.

You will need:

  • Cardboard cereal box or similar
  • Plastic wrappers – We used the multi pack wrappers from crisps and biscuits
  • An old magazine, other scraps of coloured paper, old envelopes
  • Glue
  • Scissors

Method:

1. First, we flattened the cereal box, and cut along the creases to make separate sheets of card to use as a canvas for the artwork.

2. Next, we are going to create the waves of the sea. For this we selected a mixture of blue and silver plastic wrappers, as well as with some collage papers that we had made ourselves from old white envelopes on which we had used to make some pencil rubbings in shades of blues on textured surfaces.

3. After that, we cut our chosen collage papers into wavy strips slightly longer than the width of the card sheet.

4. Then, working from top down, we began to stick each strip to the box until we reached had the bottom to create the underwater ocean background for our collage.

Tip: We found it easier to overlap the edges of the cardboard then trim off the excess for a neat edge

5. Next, we cut out sea creatures from the collage papers and plastic wrappers. You can use our fish template for this or create your own.

6. Finally, arrange and stick the sea creatures on to complete your collage and leave to dry.
