Thurrock Island: Bryony and the Plastic Problem

We are excited to reveal the Thurrock Island Storybook, which our Emily has been busy working on since the end of the Thurrock Island 2020 Community Art Project.

Throughout the summer, members of the Thurrock community took part in the weekly activities and submitted their artworks for a chance to be featured in the Thurrock Island Storybook and Art Gallery.

The Story Concept

Our story is set in a reality in which climate change has caused sea levels to rise and Thurrock is the only land left for miles.

The Island is continuing to shrink and the Landfolk are running out of space, and food supplies are dwindling due to a feud with the Merfolk following the sea-life being persecuted and captured in fishing nets.

The Merfolk have invented ways to reuse the plastic waste including turning it into power, clothing and architecture.

The Merfolk and Landfolk must work together to save their environments by sharing their knowledge and technology.

Combining the artworks from the Thurrock Island project, Emily has created a picture book, suitable for all ages, that covers themes of climate change, teamwork, diversity, and community.

Here is an example of one of the pages created using artworks from the Thurrock Island Community Art Project:

Join Bryony and her friends in their mission to save the island, reduce the pollution and reverse climate change.
