Fun Palaces is a community art event across the UK and worldwide, that takes place on a weekend in October each year.
Emily & Carole attended the event at Grays Library on 5th October 2019 with Hi Ching and Cristina Bodolan where they displayed some of their costumes and did a drawing activity workshop.
“We met Hi Ching at Tilbury Carnival in July 2019, and we already knew Cristina’s mum from the Screen-printing Workshop at Kinetika. After the carnival Hi Ching spoke to us about a project he was working on, costuming stilt walkers for Grays Christmas Light Switch On 2019, and that he was looking for costume makers and whether Emily would like to get involved.”
“I jumped at the chance of getting involved in this project and working alongside Cristina and Hi Ching to create the costumes. Throughout August and September, we met up every couple of weeks to discuss designs and fabrics we might need.
As a team we were invited to have a table at the Fun Palace event in Grays Library. Mum and I had been experimenting at home with draping fabric on our mannequin for the Snow Angel costume. During the event we did some live draping of the costume on the mannequin and many people stopped to watch and ask questions.
I also displayed my costume from my Art Foundation Diploma FMP, alongside some costumes from Hi Ching’s collection.
Cristina led a drawing and colouring workshop, getting members of the public to create their own costume designs.
I really enjoyed this event and it was exciting getting feedback from the public on my costumes and designs.”
